During her almost 30-year career as a food writer, Donna Battle Pierce has written for Ebony, Better Homes & Gardens, BET, PBS, Boys’ Life, The Chicago Defender, the Oxford American, EatingWell and many more publications. The former test kitchen director and assistant food editor for The Chicago Tribune and contributing editor for Upscale Magazine, she completed a Nieman Visiting Fellowship at Harvard in 2015.

Donna is a member of Les Dames d’Escoffier, the Southern Foodways Alliance, the International Association of Culinary Professionals and the James Beard Foundation.  She was a member of the Association of Food Journalists from 1995 to 2020.

Since returning to Santa Monica in 2022, Donna’s weekly “Skillet Diaries” newsletter is available through Substack. She is currently writing a book about the Black culinary trailblazer Freda DeKnight.
